It’s not always easy to back our abilities, but McDonald Musimuko knows creativity and confidence go hand in hand. He is the type of guy that’s not afraid to back himself and show the world what he’s got. For McDonald, the need to create and share his vision is the driving force in his life. It is this force which has given rise to his artistic persona, CreativeGod.
We caught up with McDonald to find out more about his passion for design, how he sees the world differently and what he believes makes an iKasi Original.
Hi McDonald! Thanks for taking the time to chat to us. We love your work. Can you tell our Champion readers a bit about yourself?
I’m McDonald Musimuko and I was born with a prodigious inclination and rare eye for visual aesthetics and all things design.
I had the luxury of honing my talents at one of South Africa’s leading branding and design schools, Vega and I’ve worked at some of the country’s most prestigious design agencies including Ogilvy and Mather, The Brand Union, Lowe Bull and Partners, Blue Moon Corporation and Grid Worldwide. But my biggest love by far is for my very own clothing brand aptly named; CreativeGod.
Wow, that’s epic. So what keeps you busy on a day-to-day basis?
I currently work as Senior Graphic Designer at a design agency called Lattitude Group in Joburg. You have to pay the bills, but I’m lucky that I do it for the love.
It sounds like you have a lot going on. What keeps you motivated?
My 4-year-old daughter Khanyisile. She is just mission and half!
Tell us, what does the future hold for McDonald Musimuko?
I’d love to own a nationwide designer concept store with all my work in it. I really love creating illustrations of what I see in the eyes of the people I meet in my everyday life. Oh, and have sneakers made from my art!
Any advice for young designers?
Don’t get lost in the process… Love what you do and don’t undersell your skills.
Great advice! Ok, last but certainly not least… What is an iKasi Original?
To me, an iKasi Original is someone who has the capability to become a legend to the community or the country.
