Hi, the name is Onalenna Barata Peteke.
Ona in a few words is a skilled, forward thinking and vibrant young woman who is a bundle of creativity in media practices. I do a few things you could call a job: radio presenter, newsreader, content producer, club personnel, musician, voiceover artist, events promoter and coordinator. I feel my hospitable interpersonal skills have allowed me to balance my abilities in the media world through my passion for the craft.
That was a mouthful, now let's chat a bit more about who I am and where I come from.
Heroptimistic, self-driven and hardworking character traits were molded into me at a very young age as I was brought up as an only child by my mother in a small village situated in Moretele in the North West.
Growing up in the North West Province of South Africa, I attended Primary and Secondary education at Sol Plaatje in Mafikeng. Tertiary education, I pursued a BA certificate in Humanities, majoring in Political Science at the University of Johannesburg, before rerouting my academic path to pursue media studies at Boston Media House where I’m currently majoring in Radio.
The Radio industry is a calling that I decided to answer. The radio career path complemented my informative and well-spoken nature. Stars aligned in my favour as I was ready for my big moment. I took initiative and submitted my conceptual radio link sample to Adil More’s show on Metro FM in 2013, resulting in impressive reviews from the hosts. That is when I decided to enroll at Boston Media House the year 2015. This was just the first step in my pursuit to be a media mogul in the near future.
I’m inspired by and look up to radio icon Catherine Grenfell who is regarded as a legend in the radio industry. I’ve been fortunate to have Catherine as a mentor, lecturer and mother figure in the field of radio.
This year, I have been working at BMHRadio as an on-air presenter, newsreader and voiceover artist. BMHRadio is an extension of Boston Media House (Sandton Campus) in a form of an online/campus radio station. I was also blessed this year with a learning experience at 5fm. I now host my own weekly radio show and produce my own content on BMHRadio. The radio show that I host is an informative, inspirational and edutainment program dubbed: The Afternoon Drift with Onalenna Peteke.
Furthermore, I’m currently an event organizer and coordinator for a tertiary student lead poetry and music society called The Writers Club. I also am part of the club personnel at Kong and Harem. I appreciate my deep passion and love for radio as it gives me the opportunity to be in a position of a social commentator addressing social ills and empowering the youth of South Africa and beyond through a internationally streamed radio show.
The Afternoon Drift is the medium I utilize to inspire the young through the content of the radio show. Beyond empowerment, the show further celebrates society’s opinion leaders, celebrities and general individuals who are changing the lives of others in a positive way.
Highlight interviews on The Afternoon Drift with Onalenna Peteke include but not limited to:

• Miranda Ntshangase
